A collection of marine fishes from Angola, with notes on new distribution records OceanDocs
Denis Tweddle; Eric Anderson.
Collections of fishes from demersal trawl surveys to 800 m depth off the Angolan coast in 2001, 2002 and 2005 resulted in several range extensions tabulated here. Specimens of species poorly represented in previous collections allowed improved diagnoses of Myxine ios, Torpedo bauchotae, Dysommina rugosa, Pisodonophis semicinctus, Xenomystax congroides, Lestidiops cadenati, Ophidion lozanoi, Cataetyx bruuni, Dibranchus atlanticus, Diceratias pileatus, Himantolophus paucifilosus, Neomerinthe folgori, Careproctus albescens, Paracaristius maderensis and Pachycara crossacanthum. All specimens accessioned into the Fish Collection of the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity are listed and colour plates show a selection of species from the trawl catches

A new species of Tormopsolus (Digenea: Acanthocolpidae) parasite of Genypterus brasiliensis (Teleostei: Ophidiidae) from the Brazilian coast Rev. Bras. Zool.
Knoff,Marcelo; Fernandes,Berenice M. M..
Tormopsolus brasiliensis sp. nov. is described from the intestine of Genypterus brasiliensis Regan, 1903, from Brazil. The new species is characterized mainly by having an almost square terminal oral sucker, a pharynx of the same size or larger than the oral sucker, and testes very close to each other and without vitelline follicles between them. Tormopsolus brasiliensis sp. nov. is most closely related to T. lintoni Caballero, 1952, sharing with the latter the space between the gonads and the distribution of the vitelline fields. It differs from that species by the lack of a space between the gonads and the absence of vitelline follicles between the testes; by the smaller distance between the oral and ventral suckers; by the presence of a wide ejaculatory...

Acondicionamiento y manejo de un banco de reproductores de pargo criollo (Lutjanus analis, Cuvier, 1828). OceanDocs
Llanes, Y.; Reyes, R.; Fernández, N.; Ortega, N..
Some handling practices related to health about finfish culture are analyzed and discussed in this paper. The wild caught broodstocks were cultivated for two years under environment conditions in concrete pond where developed techniques avoided stressful conditions like high stocking densities which may result in compromised fish health, disease and mortality. Marine fish species are also susceptible to many infectious pathogens including parasites. As a result of that, prophylactic bathes have been identified as method of control. Reproductive parameters could have showed due to good managements.

An oral challenge for turbot larvae with <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> OMA
Chair, M.; Dehasque, M.; Van Poucke, S.; Nelis, H.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
There is a need for a standard in vitro procedure to infect larval fish with bacteria. Such a procedure could be used as a tool to evaluate fish quality, verify fish sensitivity to a certain bacterial strain or evaluate the pathogenicity of a bacterium towards a given fish species. The availability of a challenge test is a prerequisite in studies dealing with the effect of different medicinal treatments on diseased fish. An oral challenge test would offer the possibility to investigate the routes of infection via the digestive tract, i.e. after feeding contaminated feeds. The present study aims to verify this hypothesis and proposes a standard challenge procedure for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>) larvae with a pathogenic <i>Vibrio...

Biological and economic factors in the selection of cultured fish species and the development of a bio-economic model ArchiMer
Wu, R.
The selection of candidate species for mariculture is determined by a number of biological factors, e.g. foraging efficiency, growth efficiency, mortality, grow-out period and susceptibility to environmental fluctuations, disease and crowding, as well as economic factors e.g. the supply and price of fry, grow-out cost and price of adult. A computer model incorporating these major factors is being developed, to determine and compare the potential of different culture species.

Broodstock management and induced spawning of flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Valenciennes, 1839)under a closed recirculated system OceanDocs
Bambill, G.A.; Oka, M.; Radonic, M.; López, A.V.; Müller, M.I.; Boccanfuso, J.; Bianca, F..
The present study was conducted to determine the parameters regulating spawning performance of P. orbignyanus wild broodstock. The adaptation to captivity was successfully achieved with minimal stress levels. In three consecutive spawning seasons, the annual photothermal manipulation was not effective for the maturation and natural spawning of females although males were running. Females were HCG injected, releasing non fertilized eggs. Artificial fertilization was carried out after stripping the fish with a total production of 18,000 fertilized eggs in 2001 (egg diameter=800±10 µm), 55,300 in 2002 (egg diameter= 850±12 µm)and 1,635,000 fertilized eggs in 2003 (egg diameter 818.4 ±30.08 µm, oil drop 98.1 ±2.96 µm). Comparison of individual-based model output to data using a model of walleye pollock early life history in the Gulf of Alaska ArchiMer
Hinckley, Sarah; Parada, Carolina; Horne, John K.; Mazur, Michael; Woillez, Mathieu.
Biophysical individual-based models (IBMs) have been used to study aspects of early life history of marine fishes such as recruitment, connectivity of spawning and nursery areas, and marine reserve design. However, there is no consistent approach to validating the spatial outputs of these models. In this study, we hope to rectify this gap. We document additions to an existing individual-based biophysical model for Alaska walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus), some simulations made with this model and methods that were used to describe and compare spatial output of the model versus field data derived from ichthyoplankton surveys in the Gulf of Alaska. We used visual methods (e.g. distributional centroids with directional ellipses), several indices (such as...

Conséquences à long terme d'une exposition précose à l'hypoxie sur la physiologie du bar européen (Dicentrarchus labrax) et de la sole commune (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Vanderplancke, Gwenaelle.
The dissolved oxygen in seawater has steadily declined in many coastal marine ecosystems in the last 50 years because of global warming and increasing coastal human activities. This decrease in oxygen in seawater causes episodes of hypoxia increasingly frequent and severe in coastal and estuarine areas. Some organisms may escape these environmental constraints by migration or dispersion. Others, with limited swimming capabilities must implement physiological regulation (phenotypic plasticity) to enable them to adapt and survive. This is particularly the case of marine fish larvae that are likely to be present in coastal nursery at the end of their development. It is now well established that the regulations implemented by organisms to cope with their...
